HP 2550 Laser Engine
Printer History: In October 2002, the Color LaserJet® 2500 marked the first appearance of the Canon® MultiPASS engine. It also marked the first time a color laser printer retailed below $1,000. In 2003 the Color LaserJet® 1500 was released at a low price of $549. In June 2004 the 2500 was replaced by the Color LaserJet® 2550, which, due to its low price point, was marketed as “get your color for free.”
Hardware Information: All three machines are network capable, compact and lightweight, (SMB) using spot/convenience color. All have a monthly duty cycle of 30,000 pages.
Windows and Mac compatible, the printers produce 16 ppm in monochrome and 4 ppm in color at 600 dpi with a first page out of 16 seconds black and 29 seconds color. While the 1500 is powered by a 150 MHz processor, 16 MB of memory and has only a USB port, the 2500 and 2550 models sport 300 MHz processors, 64 MB of memory and feature USB and parallel ports.
The Canon® MultiPASS engine involves a four-pass printing process (each color is individually printed per pass) and the four toner cartridges install in a carousel configuration with one imaging drum.
OEM Cartridge Information: The black toner cartridge yields 5,000 pages at 5 percent while the colors yield 4,000 pages at 5 percent coverage. All four toner cartridges are chipped, as is the imaging drum.

Comments: In 2003 HP released the 2820/2840 MFP, the first entry-level color MFP (sub-$1000) based on the 2550 engine. Since then, color MFPs have been the fastest growing market segment.
